Allan Horgan of Beverly, Al to his many friends, has died at 85.
He was born in Salem and grew up in Marblehead, and he spent most of his life in Beverly. He served in the United States Air Force and the Army Reserves, then worked as a crew scheduler for US Air until he retired, and afterward as a courier for Federal Express.
He kept himself fit and busy. He went to the Beverly YMCA three or four times a week and made friends there of every age, played pickup softball, and liked the outdoors, the beach and anywhere near the water. In his later years his routine was a morning coffee and a drive to Beverly Airport to watch the planes come and go and feed the seagulls.
His family describes a sharp wit, quick humor and a stubborn streak, a man who was always joking and whose personality was entirely his own. He had no grandchildren, but many of his daughter Jill’s friends came to think of him as a second father.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Jean; his daughter, Jill, whom he called “Kitten”; his twin brother, Albert; his younger brother, Arthur, and sister-in-law, Janice; his nieces and nephews, among them his special niece, Amy Davis; and his cat, Jerry. His parents, Albert Horgan and Rita (Mason) Horgan, died before him.
His funeral service will be held Friday, November 6, 2026 at noon at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, with visiting hours from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will be at Puritan Lawn Cemetery in Peabody. A collation and celebration of his life follows from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Danversport Yacht Club; all are welcome. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the MSPCA.
