Revere police: motorcyclist killed on Lee Burbank Highway; October numbers; toy drive

A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Lee Burbank Highway in Revere in the early hours of Friday, October 30, the Revere Police Department said in a press release issued that morning over the name of Chief Maria LaVita. Three days later the department posted its October activity summary, which counts 2,116 calls for service, 39 arrests and 72 motor vehicle crashes for the month, and announced that its annual toy drive is under way through December 14. This story draws those items together with the department’s public dispatch log for November 4.

The crash

According to the release, officers responded at about 2:50 a.m. on October 30 to a crash involving a motorcycle in the area of 251 Lee Burbank Highway. “The operator was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the release says. The Revere Police Criminal Investigation Division and the Massachusetts State Police also responded to assist, and the crash “remains under investigation.”

The department did not release the rider’s name, age or hometown, did not say whether any other vehicle was involved, and has not posted an update since. Lee Burbank Highway is the Revere section of Route 1A, the divided road that runs from the Boston line at the airport north to the Route 16 interchange. The release does not say whether the State Police crash reconstruction unit was called. We will report the rider’s identity when it is released by the police or the Suffolk County district attorney, and any update on how the crash happened.

October by the numbers

On November 2 the department posted a graphic titled “Monthly October Insights.” It lists, for the month:

  • Calls for service: 2,116
  • Arrests: 39
  • Summonses: 51
  • Motor vehicle crashes: 72
  • Written citations: 219
  • Domestic disturbances: 22
  • Directed patrols: 210
  • Reports written: 384

The graphic carries the department’s own caveat that it “serves as a general overview” and “may not comprehensively reflect all calls for service or law enforcement operations during the period.” The department has not published comparable figures for September on the same account, so a month-to-month comparison is not possible from the posted record. Taken at face value, the October numbers work out to about 68 calls a day, between two and three crashes a day, and a little more than one arrest a day, with summonses, the court process used for lesser offenses when no one is taken into custody, outnumbering arrests.

The November 4 log

The department’s public dispatch log for the 24 hours from 7 a.m. Wednesday, November 4 to 7 a.m. Thursday, November 5, posted to its website Thursday, runs six pages and 105 numbered entries. Most entries are routine: 911 hang-ups from the same Revere Beach Parkway address four times before 1 p.m., parking complaints on Squire Road and Lawson Avenue with one car towed, well-being checks, three abuse prevention orders served, lost-and-found animals, community policing stops on Broadway and Tuckerman Street, and 911 calls transferred to Boston, Lynn and the State Police.

Four entries name a charge. A shoplifting call at a store on Everett Street at 2:30 p.m. produced a summons for Brian Keith Avery, 57, of Lynn, on a charge of larceny from a person. A motor vehicle stop on Squire Road produced a summons for Isabella Lopes Goulart, 19, of Revere, for operating with a suspended license and a suspended registration. A stop on Beach Street ended with the car towed and a summons for Samuel E. Rivera Martinez, 38, of Methuen, for operating an uninsured and unregistered motor vehicle. And a call for a violation of a 209A abuse prevention order ended in the arrest of a 34-year-old Revere resident, whose name is redacted in the public log, on a charge of violating the order.

Of the four, only the abuse order call ended with someone in custody; the other three were handled by summons, which is how the department’s October count came to have more summonses than arrests. The log also records three crashes in the 24 hours, at Washburn and Winthrop avenues at 8:03 a.m., on Everett Street at 12:14 p.m. with papers exchanged, and on Washburn Avenue at 1:42 p.m.; two other shoplifting calls, at VFW Parkway and Furlong Drive; and a warrant of apprehension served on Hauman Street. A charge is not a conviction, and everyone named is presumed innocent unless and until found guilty in court. Names, ages, towns and charges are as printed in the log.

Toy drive and a Route 60 closure

The department’s annual toy drive, now in its 27th year, is collecting new, unwrapped toys through December 14 for local children; the post does not list drop-off hours, and the station is at 400 Revere Beach Parkway. The department also advised drivers on Tuesday, November 3 that American Legion Highway, Route 60, would be closed northbound at Revere Street from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. that night.
