Frederick J. Perry, known as Fred, died on Monday, November 2, 2026 at Beverly Hospital after a long illness. He was 80 and lived in Lynn.

He was born in Somerville in 1946 to Roy and Edna (O’Brien) Perry and grew up there. When both parents died while he was still a teenager, he moved at 17 to Lynn to live with an aunt and uncle. He graduated from Peabody High School in 1966 and enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam War, where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.

He worked first at First National Stores and then at General Electric before joining the City of Lynn’s Department of Public Works, where he took particular pride in his years as greenskeeper at Gannon Municipal Golf Course when the city maintained the course itself. At St. Pius V Church he was a longtime usher and greeter and made many of his closest friends. He gave his time to East Lynn Pop Warner and East Lynn Little League and, his family says, was never too busy to help someone who needed a hand.

He was married for more than 54 years to Penelope A. “Penny” (Gould) Perry, who survives him. He also leaves his son Jayson Perry and Jayson’s partner Kristen Leslie of Salem; his grandchildren Katie Perry, Edward “EJ” Carlson, Marcos Hernandez, Alexandria “Alex” Hernandez, Jordan Hernandez and Adam Perry; his great-grandchildren Aiden Hernandez, Patrick Carlson and Nevaeh Hernandez; his sister Lorraine Patterson; his brother-in-law John Gould and his wife Allison; his son-in-law Robert McClennan; and many nieces, nephews and friends. His daughter Suzanne Marie Perry-McClennan and his brother Edward Perry died before him.

Visiting hours are Wednesday, November 11 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Solimine Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn. The funeral leaves the funeral home Thursday, November 12 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Pius V Church, Lynn, followed by burial at Pine Grove Cemetery.
