Malden crash week: 21 reports, pedestrians hit on Ferry Street, seven drivers left

Malden police filed 21 motor vehicle crash reports between Saturday, October 18 and Friday, October 24, according to the department’s weekly crash-report file posted on the city’s document center. Two of the reports involve a pedestrian struck on Ferry Street, one an e-bike rider knocked off his bike at the Northern Strand Community Trail crossing on Maplewood Street, and one a bicycle hit at Maynard and Salem streets. In seven of the 21 cases the other driver had left before an officer arrived, and in two of those the department is working from video.

The file is a scan of the state crash report form the department files with the Registry of Motor Vehicles for each collision. It records the date, time and location, the vehicles involved, whether anyone was hurt or transported, whether a vehicle was towed, and a short narrative by the responding officer. The names of drivers, passengers and pedestrians appear in the file. We are not printing them. What follows is drawn from the location fields and officer narratives, in order.

Saturday, October 18

The week opened at 9:49 a.m. at Beach Street and Lynn Street, where a Nissan heading east on Lynn Street went through the intersection and collided with a rental Mitsubishi registered in Connecticut. The officer described moderate damage to the front bumper of one car and the driver’s side front bumper of the other. A passenger in the Mitsubishi was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with shoulder and back pain. Both drivers signed medical refusals and both cars were driven away.

A report filed at 2:56 p.m. describes an earlier incident: at 2:28 p.m. the day before, a Tesla legally parked in front of 248 Belmont Street was struck on its front driver’s side by the passenger side of a passing vehicle. The Tesla’s cameras captured it. The officer wrote that the other driver had not been identified at the time of the report.

At 3:45 p.m. a vehicle parked in the lot at 188 Commercial Street was reported hit on its front left side by an unknown vehicle.

At 4:28 p.m. a car parked across from 75 Meridian Street was struck on its front driver’s side bumper by the front bumper of a second car while the owner stood at the rear of the parked car. Minor damage to both, no injuries, no tows.

At 10:20 p.m. a car parked in the lot at 179 Ferry Street was hit by a Ford Focus pulling into the open space beside it. Both cars took front right bumper damage.

Sunday, October 19

At 7:11 a.m. a car turning left onto Ferry Street at Harvard Street struck a man crossing the street. The officer recorded a minor injury and a transport to MelroseWakefield Hospital.

At 7:48 a.m. a driver on Adams Street stopped at the stop sign at West Street, then went straight and hit the front driver’s side of a car traveling on West Street. The driver told the officer he did not see the other car. Both drivers reported minor damage, no one needed medical help, nothing was towed, and the two exchanged information.

At 12:04 p.m. an e-bike rider heading east on the Northern Strand Community Trail reached the Maplewood Street crossing and, according to the report, did not activate the crossing signal. A car traveling north on Maplewood Street struck him, knocking him off the bike and into the crossing pole. The rider is listed in the vulnerable user section of the form. The narrative does not describe his injuries.

Tuesday, October 21

No reports are dated Monday, October 20. At 10:54 a.m. Tuesday, at Cross Street and Ferry Street, a man told police he had been struck by a driver who then drove off. The driver was not on scene to give a statement. The officer’s body camera was activated, and medical attention was offered and declined.

Wednesday, October 22

Wednesday was the busiest day of the week, with five reports.

At 12:26 a.m. an officer responded to 30 Belmont Street, where two parked cars had been hit by a third car that took off. One of the parked cars had major damage to its front and rear bumpers, was inoperable and was towed by Rigano’s. The other had minor damage to its left front bumper. The striking car, which also had major damage to its left front bumper, was towed by Rigano’s as well, and the report lists its registration and the name of its operator, so police had identified it by the time the report was written.

At 6:31 a.m., at Cross Street and Tufts Street, one driver told the officer he had come to a complete stop on Tufts Street before entering the intersection when a second car, eastbound on Cross Street, hit him. The second driver said the first car was entering the intersection from Tufts Street when they collided. One car had heavy front bumper damage and was towed by Rigano’s; the other had moderate front bumper damage.

At about 3:10 p.m. a black Honda Accord parked in a marked space on the north side of the Burger King lot at 61 Broadway was sideswiped on its driver’s side rear quarter panel by an unknown vehicle. The officer left a request for the restaurant’s camera footage; staff said no manager was on duty and they could not pull it at the time.

At 5:51 p.m. a three-car crash at Canal Street and Charles Street began with one car making a left turn from Charles onto Canal. The car behind it went around on the right, a third car then overtook that one on the right, and the second car crashed into the first and third. One driver had camera footage, which officers reviewed.

At 6:40 p.m. a car turning left from Commercial Street onto Medford Street was struck by a southbound vehicle on Commercial Street that left the area. The report refers to a separate incident report.

Thursday, October 23

At 9:22 a.m. on Orchard Street, a driver heading east told the officer he had sideswiped a parked car on its left rear bumper and left passenger door. He did not need a tow or medical attention. The parked car’s owner said it had been parked at the side of the street; it had damage to the rear left tire and the left passenger door, and she arranged her own tow.

At 1:10 p.m. two cars collided where Kimball Street meets Forest Street. One driver was westbound on Forest Street; the other said she was northbound on Kimball Street and was turning left onto Forest Street westbound when the two hit. Both declined medical attention and both cars were drivable, one with moderate front bumper damage and the other with moderate damage along its whole passenger side. The form’s location field lists Sylvan Street and Kimball Street; the narrative says Forest Street.

At 6:04 p.m. a car making a right turn from Maynard Street onto Salem Street eastbound struck a bicycle. The narrative says no one was on the bicycle at the time. The form’s vulnerable user section nonetheless lists a person, which suggests the bicycle was being walked or held.

At 9:13 p.m. a vehicle struck a pedestrian walking in the crosswalk between Ferry Street and Magnolia Street. The report lists the vehicle’s registration, make and year as unknown. The pedestrian is listed in the vulnerable user section. The one-sentence narrative does not describe injuries.

Friday, October 24

At 10:05 a.m. at 164 Belmont Street a stopped vehicle was hit from behind by a second vehicle.

At 1:20 p.m. a car traveling east on Salem Street near number 317 went off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree. The report refers to a separate incident report and does not describe injuries.

At 4:50 p.m. a vehicle turning left off Shawmut Terrace made contact with a car parked at the corner of Shawmut Street and Shawmut Terrace, causing minor damage to the parked car’s driver’s side.

The week in numbers

Twenty-one reports in seven days: five on Saturday, three on Sunday, none on Monday, one on Tuesday, five on Wednesday, four on Thursday and three on Friday. Nine of the 21 involve a parked car. Five involve a pedestrian, an e-bike rider or a bicycle. Seven describe a driver who was unidentified or had left: the Belmont Street Tesla, the Commercial Street lot, the Cross and Ferry pedestrian, the 30 Belmont Street hit-and-run, the Burger King lot, the Commercial and Medford Street turn, and the Ferry and Magnolia crosswalk. Four vehicles were towed.

Ferry Street appears in four reports, more than any other street: the parking lot at 179 Ferry, the Harvard Street pedestrian, the Cross Street pedestrian and the Magnolia Street crosswalk. Belmont Street appears three times, at numbers 30, 164 and 248. Commercial Street, Cross Street and Salem Street each appear twice. Two people were recorded as transported to a hospital, one from Beach and Lynn streets and one from Ferry and Harvard streets. Every report lists a posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour.

The report numbers in the file run from 26000733 to 26000758 with gaps, so a handful of reports from the same week were either not finished or filed in a later batch. The department posts a file for each week; the Oct. 11 to 17 file is in the same folder, and the next one, covering Oct. 25 to 31, had not been posted as of November 4.

The weekly crash files are in the 2026 crash reports folder on the city’s document center. This week’s file is here. It is a scanned PDF of about 18 megabytes.
