Gaetano J. “Gus” Macone of Lynnfield died peacefully at home on Saturday, August 29, 2026 with his family around him. He was 88.
He was born on July 4, 1938 in Somerville, one of three children of Gaetano and Anna Macone, who had come from Gaeta, Italy, and was the first of his family born in America. He served in the Army from 1956 to 1959 and kept the friendships for life. He married Rose Colombo on April 16, 1977; they settled in Lynnfield, danced ballroom together, and had 49 years. He taught technical drawing in the Somerville Public Schools for more than 20 years, served as a justice of the peace, belonged to Somerville Elks Lodge 917, and could fix nearly anything in the house. He liked a good cigar, a long conversation and the company of his best friend since grade school, Richard Liberacce.
Besides his wife, Rose M. (Colombo) Macone, he leaves his daughter, Nadine Desiderio and her husband Marco of Lynnfield, and his grandchildren, Graziana, Rocco and Francesca Desiderio. His brothers Anthony and Raymond Macone died before him.
A funeral Mass is Friday, September 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Maria Goretti Church, 112 Chestnut Street, Lynnfield. Arrangements are by the Robinson Funeral Home, Melrose. The family suggests donations to the Lynnfield Department of Veteran Services, 525 Salem Street, Lynnfield, MA 01940, checks payable to Lynnfield American Legion Post 131.
