Arthur Carlow of Beverly died peacefully on October 22, 2026. He was 83.

He graduated from Reading High School and Fitchburg State College and began teaching industrial arts at Marblehead Junior High School, where in the fall of 1968 he met Lizbeth Forbes, the new French and Spanish teacher. They married the next summer. He went on to Marblehead High School as a teacher and administrator, known to generations of students as “Ace” and “Industrial Art,” and taught them not just skills but the habit of making things with their hands. He designed, built and sold products from his garage, and after retiring in 2001 founded Gullwing Paddles, hailing passing kayakers to try a new paddle. He remodeled his Beverly home for more than five decades to fit a growing family, with his four children as apprentices, kept the garage workshop as his sanctuary, shared Scotch and stories with friends and neighbors, traveled widely with Liz and drove a 1960 Austin-Healey around town.

He leaves his wife, Lizbeth (Forbes) Carlow; his sons, Jason Carlow, his wife Julia and their children Lukas, Oskar and Helen, and Peter Carlow, his wife Nicola and their children Zoe, Ayden and Mason; his daughters, Kate Henebury, her husband Michael and their children Desmond and Maelin, and Sarah Rocap, her husband Jezrahiah and their children Lilian and Reese; and his brothers, Richard and Louis Carlow. His parents, Lyman and Doris (Pesce) Carlow, and his brother Roy died before him.

A celebration of life is planned for the winter, with a private service for family and friends. Arrangements are by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly.
