Jill M. (Baylis) Carey of Jensen Beach, Fla. and Melrose died peacefully at Brigham and Women’s Hospital on Friday, October 23, 2026. She was 67.
She was born on August 7, 1959, one of two children of George and Jean (Hills) Baylis, grew up in Wenham, graduated from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in 1977 and went on to Katharine Gibbs. Working in Boston she met Michael J. Carey, whom she married; they lived in Bedford, then upstate New York, where she played racquetball, golf and tennis. In Jensen Beach she took up pickleball and in a few seasons was the community champion, walked the beach for sea glass, played mahjong, rehabbed houses with her own hands and volunteered as an operator on a suicide prevention hotline. Animals were a constant, from the black Labs of her childhood to her Yorkie Sam and her Westie Zeke. The couple returned to Massachusetts in 2017, and she threw herself into her grandchildren.
She leaves her husband of 30 years, Michael J. Carey; her stepchildren, Michael R. Carey and his wife Emily Hinchey of Boxford and Suzanne Kaplan and her husband Mike of Melrose; her grandchildren, Bryce, Jack, Abigail, William, Andrew and James; her brother, Glenn Baylis and his wife Lisa of Bedford; and her niece and nephew, Heather Pask of Ripton, Vt. and Craig Baylis of Beverly.
